Identify the lock

A BIOS or UEFI password is different from your Windows sign-in password. It may protect startup, device settings, or, in some cases, the storage drive. Note the message shown and identify the make and model.

Follow the manufacturer’s procedure

There is no single procedure that works on every computer. Dell, for example, directs users to contact support and may request the model, Service Tag, and proof of ownership for recovery. For other brands, consult the relevant official support service.

  • Have the model and serial number ready.
  • Gather the invoice or another proof of ownership.
  • For a company device, contact the IT department first.
  • Describe the exact message and the steps you have already tried.

What changed in this bulletin

The original PDF suggested triggering a lock and using a code generator as a solution for any computer. This version replaces that claim with manufacturer-specific guidance. Do not enter random passwords repeatedly or follow instructions for a different model: the procedure depends on the device and the type of protection.

If you also see a BitLocker recovery key prompt, treat it as a separate request. Tell support about both messages to avoid confusing firmware recovery with access to your data.
